Choose a Color, Command the Outcome: The Hidden Superpower of Color Psychology and Mindset
Imagine you have a massive presentation at work tomorrow. You’re feeling anxious, your imposter syndrome is flaring up, and your brain is trapped in a loop of “what if I mess up?” You walk over to your closet to pick out an outfit.
Most of us choose our clothes based on what’s clean or what fits. But what if the color you put on your body could actually rewrite your brain chemistry, calm your nervous system, and inject an instant dose of courage directly into your day?
It sounds like magic, but it’s actually physics.
On the latest episode of the Well2Lead Podcast, host Bobby Davis sat down with Laurie Hartley-Moore, a holistic health practitioner and the author of The Color Constitution. Laurie’s life work centers on a beautiful, powerful concept: color is not just a visual aesthetic. It is a hidden superpower that we can use intentionally to transform our confidence, our health, and our daily choices.
If you are tired of running on the chronic stress treadmill and want to learn how to consciously design your environment and mindset, Laurie’s wisdom offers a perfect blueprint.
From Heartbreak to Holistic Healing
Laurie’s journey into the world of holistic health didn't start in a textbook; it started with a personal crisis. As a young woman, she watched her mother battle cancer. While she deeply respected the intentions of Western medicine, she quickly saw its limitations when used entirely on its own. It treated the physical symptoms of the disease, but it often neglected the complex emotional, mental, and spiritual toll taking place underneath.
That profound experience drove Laurie to become a lifelong learner of holistic wellness.
To Laurie, true health is never just about a doctor's chart or a number on a scale. It is a multi-dimensional puzzle that includes our relationships, our careers, our thought habits, and our energetic state.
"What if you had a secret superpower that could help you be happier, have better health, and have the relationships that you want the most?" Laurie asks.
The answer begins by understanding the hidden mechanisms behind how our brains construct our reality.
The Belief Chain and the Five-Second Formula
Before you can understand how color impacts your life, you have to understand how a single thought can alter your physical body. Laurie maps this out using a framework called The Belief Chain:
It all starts with our subconscious programming—the stories we were told about ourselves as children. Those deep-seated beliefs trigger our automatic daily thoughts. Those thoughts then create our physical emotions (like fear, excitement, or anxiety). Those emotions dictate our actions, and our actions ultimately form our life’s reality.
When you allow chronic negative thinking to run wild, your brain interprets those thoughts as real, physical dangers. It fires up your sympathetic nervous system, flooding your body with cortisol and adrenaline. Over time, this constant chemical bath leads directly to severe anxiety, depression, and physical exhaustion.
To break this toxic chain, Laurie teaches a brilliant "five-second formula."
The moment you catch yourself slipping into a negative thought loop or a stressful reaction, you have a tiny five-second window to intervene. You consciously acknowledge the reaction, interrupt it, and choose a replacement thought before the survival chemistry of your brain takes over.
By doing this consistently, you effectively rewire your nervous system and train yourself to happen to life, rather than letting life happen to you.
Color is Frequency (And How It Shapes Mood)
Once you learn how to pause your automated negative thoughts, you can start using external tools to intentionally elevate your emotions. That is where color psychology comes into play.
To understand why color impacts our mood, you have to look at the science of light. Color is not static; it is light, and light is a literal frequency of energy. Because our bodies are highly sensitive energetic systems, different color wavelengths trigger distinct psychological and biological responses within us.
Laurie breaks down how we can strategically use specific color frequencies to anchor our moods every day:
- 🔴 Red for Courage: Red is a high-energy, high-frequency color. If you are feeling insecure or need to step into a leadership role with bold confidence, incorporating red into your look provides a subconscious anchor for bravery.
- 🔵 Blue for Trust and Calm: Blue operates at a soothing frequency that signals safety, peace, and open communication. It is the perfect color to surround yourself with when you need to decompress or project reliable authority.
- 🟠Orange for Connection: Orange is the color of warmth and social camaraderie. If you are entering a space where you want to break down barriers and build authentic relationships, orange is your best asset.
- 💗 Pink for Self-Care: Pink serves as a gentle visual reminder to extend grace, love, and compassion back to yourself.
- 🟡 Yellow for Joy: Yellow stimulates the mind and invokes a lighthearted sense of optimism and focus.
Designing an Intentional Life
The beauty of Laurie’s framework is how incredibly practical it is. You don’t need an expensive lifestyle overhaul to start using color therapy; you just need intentionality.
Think about the spaces where you spend the most time. If your recovery environment or bedroom is cluttered with harsh, chaotic visual colors, your brain won't rest. Laurie notes that earthy, grounding tones like brown, beige, and green possess a deeply restorative frequency that helps lower blood pressure and mimics the soothing safety of nature.
You can even look at the color of the foods you eat. Natural, vibrantly colored whole foods carry distinct energetic frequencies and vital nutrients—like Vitamin D—that directly impact your brain chemistry and protect you against mood drops.
The message Laurie leaves us with is beautifully empowering: you do not have to be a helpless victim of your environment or your old subconscious programming. By mastering your inner thought loops with the five-second formula and consciously curating the color frequencies of your clothes, food, and home, you can actively steer your emotional ship.
As Laurie summarizes perfectly: "Choose a color, change your feeling, command the outcome."
